Pfizer's Worldwide Research and Development (WRD) Unit is seeking a Senior Director, Operations and Scientific Affairs to join the SPINE (Strategy, Portfolio, competitive INtelligence and Enterprise operations) Group. The ideal candidate will be a well-respected leader with demonstrated success in strategic advisement, communications, analytics and operations in the life sciences. The right leader will also bring a higher level degree in the sciences (PhD or MD) as well as scientific rigor and expertise to advance the portfolio. The Senior Director, Operations and Scientific Affairs is a senior leadership position in the SPINE Group. Role Description

The Senior Director, Operations and Scientific Affairs will join the SPINE Group and be responsible for providing senior-level, scientific, strategic and operational support to the President of WRD and the Vice President of SPINE. S/He will monitor WRD performance across a broad spectrum of measures to help identify areas for improvement. S/He will report to the VP and Head of SPINE, and partner closely with the WRD Leadership Team, Chiefs of Staff to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT)/WRD Leadership Team, other groups within SPINE, the Portfolio Decision Analysis (PDA) Group, Investor Relations, Corporate Affairs and others to form an effective and collaborative team. The ideal candidate is experienced and able to operate effectively at the Executive level.

The incumbent will be asked to coordinate rapid, thoughtful responses to content-related requests of the WRD President from all sources (CEO, Board of Directors, Investor Relations, colleagues, etc.). S/He will play a central role in WRD's annual operating plan process, supporting business critical strategic/competitive analyses as needed. This non-traditional role will combine strategy and communications, working across content, communications, analytics and operations, requiring the Senior Director to bring a sharp strategic perspective to not only address near-term situations, but also envision future strategies for WRD's success.

The Senior Director will manage a team budget and supervise two Pfizer colleagues directly reporting into this role. For the right candidate, Pfizer offers extensive opportunities for exposure to leadership as well as the potential consideration for future leadership roles.


+ Leverage his or her knowledge of science & business to develop internal & external presentations for the WRD President, suitable for stakeholders ranging from scientific to non-scientific, including the Board of Directors (BOD) and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

+ Apply advanced concepts and principles to perform research, information gathering and analysis to prepare frameworks, innovative ideas, slides, and background materials

+ Address requests for information, analyses, actions and decisions from the CEO, ELT, BOD, WRD Leadership Team and other corporate and external constituents in a timely, coordinated manner

+ Ensure WRD President is properly briefed and well prepared at all times for key internal and external meetings and presentations

+ Develop, launch and maintain a comprehensive dashboard to monitor key WRD performance metrics in support of divisional goals; identify major trends/gap areas and tee up for discussion at WRD leadership team meeting once per quarter; ensure robust dashboard refreshes (monthly/quarterly, as agreed)

+ Participate in the creation/delivery of WRD's Annual Operating Plan - for both ELT and Board audiences; partner with the WRD Strategy Lead to ensure tight coordination and alignment with key senior stakeholders across WRD and Pfizer to confirm all information, messaging and priorities are accurate and impactful

+ Manage planning and preparation for Scientific committees of the BOD [specifically, the External Advisory Committee (EAC) & the Science & Technology Committee (STC)], including overall strategic framing/messaging, generation of pre-read and presentation materials and talking points; coordinate across multiple groups to ensure accurate and consistent information

+ Support WRD President's monthly One-on-Ones with the CEO by identifying appropriate discussion themes, preparing comprehensive background materials highlighting key pipeline advances, events and upcoming milestones

+ Support annual WRD goal-setting and mid-year/year-end goals assessment for CEO and BOD

+ Work with Investor Relations (IR) to lead the development of the WRD President's briefing and talking points in support of quarterly earnings calls and "One Pfizer" Broadcasts/Town Halls

+ Lead and manage R&D Scientific and Business Learning programs/initiatives

+ Apply technical/scientific and business knowledge by participating in scientifically oriented initiatives/teams to support and influence the future direction of WRD and report progress to the WRD President

+ Support effective on-boarding of key WRD leadership hires and new BOD members through the creation of materials and, when necessary, directly meeting with new hires to walk them though the organization, the pipeline, etc.

+ As needed, recruit, mentor and oversee the work of colleagues on Pfizer secondments, temporary internal assignments, on the Operations and Scientific Affairs team

+ Conduct rapid analyses for the WRD President as requested, e.g., competitive intelligence requests, quick portfolio/pipeline analyses, benchmarking summaries, summarizing reports for briefings

+ When needed, present overall WRD Strategy, pipeline and priorities to various internal audiences


+ PhD in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline, or equivalent

+ Ten years or more of relevant experience, preferably in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry

+ Over four years of management consulting experience is required, along with an advanced scientific and business background

+ A strong scientific mindset and knowledge to work on scientific initiatives and presentations for the President of WRD

+ Ability to think strategically and be able to coherently integrate knowledge of the Pfizer portfolio, the competitive landscape and evolving technologies

+ Ability to multitask and deal with a large volume of requests / deliverables on a regular basis and quickly/effectively prioritize and balance competing tasks in real-time

+ Motivated, bringing the initiative to take on and deliver against important tactical / operational tasks on a day-to-day basis

+ Experience working independently and owning deliverables from end to end while also accepting and responding to specific guidance from internal stakeholders on near-term or urgent tasks

+ Demonstrated sound business judgment and business acumen to ensure that the thinking and recommendations are grounded in reality and in the best interests of the business

+ Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships with and influence key WRD leaders (WRD-LT and LT-1) and earn their trust

+ Facilitate easy communication and allow quick access to information needed for the President of WRD

+ Ability to develop a broad, big picture understanding across WRD units/lines so that this can be appropriately reflected in the President's communications, presentations, briefings, etc.

+ A strong presence and interpersonal skills to operate/interact effectively with key Executive-level audiences when needed (e.g., ELT, BOD, CEO's office, senior external partners, etc.)

+ Experience leading or managing a multi-functional team in a relevant environment

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
