Job Description:  

The Sr. Engineer of Mechanization provides direction, leadership and administration of Supply Chain Projects related to mechanization systems design and integration in support of new construction, conversions, remodels, related programs and/or major capital improvements, investments, and new or sustaining initiatives.

Position Purpose

This position leads / supports an array of projects related to The Home Depot Distribution Center Facilities infrastructure. This role has the responsibility for items such as scope definition and delivery, and ensuring design, quality, schedule, and financial objectives are met.  Knowledge of engineering principles and practices related to material handling and storage system layout/design, construction, and concepting is required.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Support the design and execution coordination of DC projects to include:
    • Operational Layout
    • Material Handling Systems
    • Storage Systems
    • Facility Infrastructure (needed in conjunction with above)
    • Management of scope associated with new construction and upgrade/retrofit activities in operational Supply Chain facilities.
    • Determine/manage capital and expense budgets associated with all assigned projects.
    • Experience with management of projects ranging from $50K - $20M.
    • Detailed knowledge and thorough understanding of technical specifications and skill with ensuring compliance by outside vendors.
    • Develops and administers the scheduling and progress against of all assigned projects.
    • Continually evaluates means to reduce construction costs and duration of projects.
    • Provides regular status updates and associated reporting (progress, budget/financial and other reports as needed).
    • ID and implement innovative technologies to drive operational efficiency within the Distribution Center facilities.  Develop analysis and associated business case to demonstrate return on capital invested.
    • Contributes content and assists in the development and maintenance of Design Criteria Manual (DCM) documentation and Exhibit Drawing standards for related platforms/DC formats.

Nature and Scope

  • Position reports to Sr. Manager or Manager of Design Build Sustainment.

Environmental Job Requirements

  • Typically located in a comfortable indoor area (office environment).
  • Regular exposure to distribution center environments and/or construction jobsites to include mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odors, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights.


Travel is highly dependent on projects assigned and effectiveness in managing.

May be periods of heavy travel of up to 75% of the time.


Minimum Qualifications:

Must be eighteen years of age or older.

Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Education Required:

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience:

5-10 yrs. dpo. types/scope of work assignments previously delivered.

Physical Job Requirements:

There is some requirement to lift or handle material or equipment of moderate weight (1-30 pounds).

Additional Qualifications:

Relocation assistance is available.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of warehouse processes.
  • Familiarity with the principles of material handling system (MHS) design.
  • Exposure to maintenance and obsolescence principles/programs associated with conveyor and ancillary equipment.
  • Familiarity with the determination of warehouse storage systems requirements determination and related design principles.
  • Understanding of facility construction principles and related disciplines to include Architectural, MEP, General Contractors, and subcontractor resources.
  • Familiarity with conveyor control systems (CCS), warehouse control systems (WCS) and warehouse management systems (WMS).

  • Application familiarity/proficiency:  CAD, Microsoft Office Suite (incl. Visio, Project, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Outlook).
