The Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant within Optum will partner closely with UHC Medicare & Retirement to perform critical research and investigation of key business problems through quantitative analysis of Medicare Advantage utilization and cost data. The Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant will proactively identify, communicate, and lead organizational dialogue related to healthcare cost/trend opportunities and risks throughout the organization. As a subject matter expert, the Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant will interpret and analyze clinical data from various sources and recommend best approaches to transform the healthcare industry. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understand and interpret key drivers of health care trends (i.e. medical cost trends, utilization, etc.)
  • Perform mathematical analysis that provides management with statistical findings and conclusions
  • Analyze forecasts and trends and translate highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences including senior leaders
  • Provide management with unbiased advice and opinions in regard to our clinical program strategy
  • Build strong relationships within the organization including finance, network pricing, product, actuarial/underwriting, clinical, and operations

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related degree
  • 4+ years of experience identifying and effectively communicating trends in highly complex healthcare data
  • Expertise working with formulas, calculations, charts, graphs in MS Excel
  • At least basic knowledge of statistical methods, either from educational study or professional experience
  • Experience in prioritizing work on multiple complex assignments with ongoing deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SAS, R, SPSS, or other statistical programming language
  • Experience as a Statistician
  • Experience with Medicare Advantage products
  • Advanced degree
  • Experience with hypothesis testing, clinical program evaluation and/or regression analysis
