What You'll Do

The Cisco Patent Portfolio Manager (PPM), will play a key role in developing Cisco's award-winning patent portfolio, including establishing and implementing patent strategy for multiple key technologies in partnership with Cisco’s business and technology leaders while managing a large volume of cases and outside prosecutors. You will be a trusted intellectual property adviser to multiple technology groups. The PPM will also spend a portion of their time in becoming proficient in patent research and analysis tools and will participate in cross-licensing activities. Given the impact and workload involved, you must have excellent communication skills, maturity and be able to prioritize and effectively manage a diverse workload. Who You Are

You are a thought leader who has experience in each of the following areas:

Patent Strategy Development:

PPM will work with other members of the IP team to develop and implement Cisco's patent strategy. PPM will work closely with engineering and other business organizations to understand business priorities and challenges and incorporate those into the patent strategy for both domestic and foreign filing.

Patent Portfolio Development:

PPM will assist with activities related to the development and generation of patent applications. This will include general evangelization of the patent program, education of the engineering community regarding patentability, and leading proactive invention harvesrting sessions to identify potential patentable ideas.

Cisco Patent Committee Meetings:

The PPM will chair meetings of various Cisco patent committees and provide guidance regarding the patentability of inventions under review. The PPM will also provide guidance to the patent committee regarding strategy and goals. The PPM will be responsible for the results produced by patent committee and ensuring alignment with overall patent strategy.

Outside Counsel Management:

The PPM is responsible for management of outside counsel. In this role, PPM will assign and manage work performed by outside prosecution firms. PPM will be responsible for educating outside counsel regarding overall patent strategy and ensuring that outside counsel comply with Cisco’s patenting guidelines and implement Cisco’s patent strategy. PPM will be responsible for ensuring adherence to overall Cisco budget.

Patent Portfolio Management/Quality Control:

The PPM will monitor application quality, provide feedback to outside prosecutors, and allocate work assignments to assure responsiveness and conformance to Cisco quality standards. The PPM will tier, prune and exhance his/her portfolio of patent assets to maximize impact to Cisco’s overall IP strategy.

The desired skills we are looking for are:

•Detailed knowledge and understanding of, and on-hands experience in, patent law.

•Able to understand and quickly grasp different areas of technology; able to review and analyze patents in a practical way.

•Strategic, creative thinker with excellent communication, business judgment, problem solving, organizational and follow-through skills.

•Able to analyze complex business, technical and legal situations and to develop and implement recommendations that meet the business, technical and legal needs of the company.

•Ability to communicate articulately and persuasively with different levels of the organization, including the engineering community, senior executives and senior managers.

•Must be a strong team player who thrives in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

•Familiarity with multinational/international patent law and practices is a plus.

The minimum requirements for this role are:

•Must be a registered patent attorney with a minimum of 6 to 8+ years of experience in patent preparation, prosecution and management.

•Experience in patent portfolio management experience for a Fortune 500 company.

•Bachelor Degree in EE or CS or significant software experience required.

•Computer or telecommunications industry experience desirable.
