Company Cox Media Group
Title: Senior Political/Heartland Editor, Rare
JobID: 172725
Category: Editorial and Newsroom
Industry: Cox Media Group
Job Type: Full-time

Description

Rare is looking for a visionary editor to build from scratch a new enterprise journalism team and lead our coverage of heartland issues, particularly as they intersect with Washington, the Trump presidency and the liberal-conservative divide in America. This is not a 9-to-5, Monday-through-Friday job. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for the right experienced journalist to create something new and better, guarding against the blind spots and groupthink of the political establishment and national press.

With the support of our sole investor, Cox Media Group, Rare.us has found success in the social media age with a mix of curation, uplifting original content and a youthful, liberty-minded point of view. Rare had 18 million unique visitors in January 2017, making it one of the largest news sites in the U.S. The election of Donald Trump feels like something new and different, and it excites us. Whether you see a trainwreck unfolding or a much-needed (albeit messy) disruption of Washington norms, you can’t look away. We see an opening, a “rare” opportunity.

Many in the heartland have lost trust in Washington. They want plain-spoken news and information with a bias toward common sense and a focus on heartland issues. They are looking to improve their lives and for ways to be more connected in their communities. They trust their gut and believe America is the greatest country on earth, but it’s really the average Joe who makes it great. We see a cynical media and political establishment that stokes fears and stirs emotions over things that don’t really matter to them. We reject that cynicism and want to build a team that holds Washington and the national media accountable. We need the right editor to help shape this initiative.

You have:
  • A body of work that exemplifies the kinds of heartland stories we want to tell at Rare
  • Worked as a data journalist for a national news organization
  • Experience telling stories on multiple platforms
  • An entrepreneurial streak
  • Excellent news judgment, attention to detail
  • Strong leadership abilities to inspire and drive a team
  • Strong opinions about how a successful digital news operation ought to work
  • An abundance of story ideas
  • An understanding of the social landscape that drives and engages audiences
  • An ability to understand both the granular and the big picture
  • A really keen sense of news, what makes news and how to tell news to a conservative readership
  • How to successfully tell the same story to different audiences without sacrificing the truth
  • An easy-going spirit, an aversion to drama and an ability to stay calm and focused during stressful situations
What you will do:
  • Report to the managing editor in Washington
  • Write and report
  • Assign stories to writers
  • Coordinate content channels with social/audience team
  • Coach and direct writers on stories
  • Work with sister websites for continuity and efficacy
  • Manage field of freelancers
  • Work with video department on ideas and execution

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4-6 years of digital reporting and editing experience
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing demands
  • Passion for the news and for the truth
  • Comfortable on television
