Cox Communications is looking for a Strategic Architect III who will be responsible providing site reliability engineering of our integration (middleware) applications.   The primary focus of the role is to leverage aspects of software engineering and apply them to our production operations with goal of creating ultra-scalable and highly reliable software systems.   Responsibilities include automation of software deployments, driving Service Levels (Availability/Reliability) through proactive monitoring and alerting, engineering performance, quality and efficiency of applications, as well as providing emergency incident response and support.     
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions: 
  • Lead the evolution of Site Reliability Engineering discipline within the BSS Integration team 
  • Drive software engineering focused approach within the BSS Integration dev/ops organization
  • Responsible for driving key Service Level Agreement metrics  
  • Engineer Application Performance Management tools to drive Availability, Quality, and Performance of middleware applications
  • Monitor platform and applications for errors and performance problems
  • Provide Incident Response including on-call emergency response to production problems
  • Lead incident command to successful conclusion and effectively communicate to management
  • Drive proactive capacity management of application environments 
  • Continue to evolve our SDLC processes and automation of deployment processes
  • Adhere to established Problem and Change management procedures
  • Assist in the defining of requirements to ensure that future deployments are operationally sound
  • Partner with boundary partners to improve overall performance and availability of Integration applications
  • Strong balance of hands-on experience in development and operational support of applications
  • Troubleshoot application, leveraging in-depth knowledge of system functionality and business logic
  • Develop or update existing scripts for automation of routine tasks
  • Provide 4th tier application support and vendor engagement 
  • Assist in the documentation of current and future systems


  • Minimum 8 years working in an IT software engineering environment
  • 5+ years of experience supporting/developing enterprise middleware and/or web services or applications (i.e. J2EE, JBOSS)
  • Experience developing within an agile & iterative development environment
  • Able to write and execute advance MS/Oracle SQL queries
  • Able to identify network issues and analyze network traffic (i.e. snoop, tcpdump, wireshark)
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose application issues and get to the root cause of problem 
  • Experience implementing business objectives and meeting project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work with minimal direction and in a team environment 
  • Experience with distributed server environments and cloud computing
  • Excellent analysis and problem-solving skills, with great attention to detail
  • Experience with and comprehension of the urgency required for support of production systems
  • Experience with the following technologies/tools
    • Red Hat JBoss EAP, AMQ,  and Camel/Fuse
    • Web Server Administration
    •                Apache, Jetty, IIS
    • Linux System Administration
    • Bash/KSH Scripting
    •                Additional scripting language a plus
    • Ansible experience with roles/playbooks
    • Windows Server Administration
    • Windows batch scripting
    • Strong JVM Tuning/Troubleshooting
    • In-depth Java development
    • Application Performance Mangement (APM) tools such as New Relic, HP BSM  
    • In-depth knowledge of Splunk
  • BS/BA in related discipline (i.e., Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems) 
  • Experience working with ICOMS Billing systems (Netcracker, AS400)
  • Ability to focus on primary objective yet also consider ‘big picture’ implications
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Project and people leadership experience
  • Experience with Cloud computing specifically (PaaS) Platform as a Service development environment (RedHat/Openshift) 
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
