This opening is for a Senior Scientist in the Manufacturing Science and Techonlogy (MSAT) Chemistry Process Development group primarily focused on performing laboratory and pilot-scale process characterization and process optimization studies.

Utilizing a high level of technical expertise, the incumbent is responsible for moderate to highly complex projects related to the development or application of state-of-the-art processes, equipment, control schemes, process optimization, qualification of alternate raw materials and components, or transfer of production from development or between commercial sites. Work may include projects and tasks in any or all of the following stages: scope definition, feasibility studies, lab/pilot scale modeling, simulation, cost/benefit analyses, design, specification development, project planning, implementation, and post-implementation monitoring and follow-up. The incumbent will contribute on cross-functional projects and teams with periodic involvement and coaching from their supervisor. Projects must achieve business, quality, and compliance objectives, and must be executed in a manner that assures full compliance with government regulations and internal company standards and values.


+ Incumbent must be organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently or in a collaborative environment.

+ Development of laboratory- and pilot-scale process chemistry models.

+ Execution of process characterization and feasibility experiments.

+ Design of experiments and analysis of experiemental results using Excel spreadsheets and/or statistical analysis software.

+ Operation of laboratory equipment and instruments.

+ Documenting results in electronic laboratory notebooks and reviewing the notebooks of peers.

+ The incumbent is expected to prepare technical reports and make oral presentations to scientists and management, as required.


+ Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or other related discipline: BS + 12 years; MS + 10 years; PhD + 0 - 4 years

+ Extensive experience with protein and carbohydrate chemistry in general and bioconjugation chemistry specifically is strongly desired

+ An strong background in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry is required.

+ An ability to safely perform laboratory tasks (chemical reactions, weighing of solids, solution preparation, reagent addition) is required.

+ Hands-on experience in bioconjugation chemistry, normal flow filtration, and tangential flow filtration of proteins and/or polysaccharides is strongly preferred.

+ Experience in supporting scale-up and technology transfer to pilot / commercial scale facilities is preferred.

+ Experience with statistical experimental design and analysis using relevant software packages is preferred.

+ Must be comfortable with using MS Word, MS Excel and MS Powerpoint as well as the control software for automated laboratory equipment.

+ Knowledge of GLP/GMP regulatory requirements is preferred.

+ Excellent documentation and communication skills are required.


The incumbent will at times be expected to spend at least 75% of their time in a laboratory environment standing, walking, or sitting at the laboratory bench. Minimal lifting is required.


Weekend work and travel requirements are minimal; however in order to complete reactions and purifications in the required timeframes it may be necessary to work flexible hours (after 5:30 p.m. or prior to 8:00 a.m.) up to several days per month.
