Prudential Group Insurance underwriting division is looking for an experienced Group Disability Underwriter to support National Account market segment supporting employer groups of 5,000 employees.   Group Life Underwriting expertise would be a plus.   The person in this position will be primarily accountable for underwriting Group Disability proposals and In force accounts in accordance with statutory regulations and existing underwriting policies and practices, analyzing cases and making and communicating decisions in a manner which contributes to the profitability of the product, the reputation of the company and attainment of strategic business goals.  May also perform life underwriting   A good understanding of Group Life Underwriting is a plus.  This person functions independently and focuses more externally to resolve issues while making intelligent risk decisions.


Main Job Responsibilities/Competencies:


  • Functions as a highly independent and experienced underwriter able to manage large complex cases, but is not yet expected to handle all levels of complexity.  Makes sound decision to drive results.
  • Is expected to perform as an underwriting champion (SME) on a variety of assigned subjects.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships.  Works closely with sales staff, brokers and clients to discuss financial results and support or directly engage in the negotiation process.
  • May manage ad-hoc projects, and/or participates in periodic process and technical design work to improve service, efficiency, or profitability.
  • Fosters continuous learning for themselves and others.  Expected to provide technical support to less experienced team members and may act as a formal mentor to less experienced underwriters.
  • Demonstrates problem solving skills on risk and service related issues and broad institutional knowledge in the development of solutions.
  • Incumbent is anticipated to have 8-10 years of underwriting experience.

  • Strong understanding and application of Group Disability product principles and features
  • Group Disability Underwriting experience, preferably 7 years, or equivalent through related work experience.
  • Group Life Underwriting experience (a plus)
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Strong Analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
