Position Summary:
Responsible for the staffing, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for psychiatric and chemically dependent patients during each designated shift. Also, responsible for the operational and programmatic management of the designated shift; and assist in the professional growth and development of nursing staff, and directly supervises 10 or less employees in the respective unit, carries out supervisory responsibilities in according with the organization’s. This position is responsible for planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems when needed. -Assists in development and implementation of nursing programs and activities on assigned program -Facilitates communication among multidisciplinary staff, including clinical and administrative staff -Determines and implements nursing system of delivery of patient care in conjunction with the Nurse Executive -Organizes, directs and delegates the supervision of nursing personnel assigned to the unit -Meets regularly with the Nurse Executive to provide consistency with the nursing department and communicate pertinent issues on the units -Assists in orientation and staff development activities for each unit -Organizes and facilitates the daily operations of the nursing department -Participates and provides input to nursing and facility-wide committees -As needed, schedules staff on an 8-hour basis keeping in mind budgetary restraints while maintaining quality of patient care. Assumes responsibility for adequate staffing coverage -Manages FTE ratios in correspondence with unit’s patient census and adheres to FTE grids -Facilitates therapeutic milieu and implementation of nursing interventions consistent with individual needs of the adults and staffing patterns. Assists in clinical resolution of issues. -Demonstrates knowledge of nursing department philosophy and assumes responsibility for maintaining standards of nursing practice and standards of care for all patients -Provides for ongoing evaluation and training of clinical staff -Demonstrates knowledge of clinical department philosophy and assumes responsibility for maintaining best practice standards of care for all patients -In consultation with Nurse Executive and the Human Resources Director, assists in hiring of additional staff, evaluates designated staff and conducts performance reviews as scheduled. Appropriately disciplines assigned nursing personnel in agreement with the Nurse Executive and the Director of Human Resources. -Maintains environment in which employees are motivated and morale is high -Assists in ensuring all staff is in compliance with orientation and in-service education programs -Demonstrates full level of awareness of unit milieu, prioritizes and provides appropriate guidance to staff -Effectively utilizes PRN/Part-time employees when scheduling to minimize overtime -Observes and interprets behavior, which demonstrates an understanding of psychiatric concepts, diagnoses and developmental stage -Assists in assessing and the admission of new patients -Assists with family issues of patients and intervenes when necessary on behalf of the unit’s nursing staff -Formulates and assists nursing staff in nursing diagnosis/problem statements -Assists unit nursing and clinical staff in identification of normal and abnormal/problematic physiological, psychological and social factors; supervises integration of findings into assessment of the patient(s) -Prioritizes nursing care interventions according to individual patient and overall unit milieu needs -Collaborates with the Medical Director and Nurse Executive as pertains to patient care issues -Provides or directs skilled nursing care in complex clinical situations with adults -Ensures the implementation and maintenance of nursing and clinical policies and procedures specific to the designated shifts and units -Assists in development and review of current nursing practices and theories that apply to designated unit -Effectively utilizes the Nursing Process as the basis for nursing care -Plans and organizes nursing assignments/interventions according to patient needs and assures integration into the multidisciplinary treatment plan(s) -Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in administration of psychopharmacological, physiological and psychotherapeutic interventions -Utilizes knowledge of actions; indications; contraindications; side effects; correct dose/routes; and nursing implications of all medications and in the supervision of nurses -Consistently directs administration of medication according to hospital policy and procedure -Intervenes with good judgment in medical and psychiatric emergencies -Consistently demonstrates ability to communicate with client in establishing favorable attitudes and motivating him/her to reach desired cooperation and effort in rehabilitative development -Demonstrates knowledge of legal implications of clinical practice -Assists in the coordination and evaluation of student and visitor education on the unit -Consistently provides/directs patient and family education that is developmentally appropriate -Assists in treatment planning, revision of treatment care and reassessment of patient along with physicians and multidisciplinary staff -Collects data for performance improvement monitoring activities -Professionally collaborates with all staff members to facilitate the coordinate contribution to patient care and implementation of corrective action plans -Assures continuity of care and effective communication with families and referral sources -Maintains and monitors conduct of route inspection/check for patient and unit safety -Corrects/reports hazardous conditions/equipment in the environment of care -Notifies Nurse Executive and/or Administration for any unusual problem or occurrence on the unit. Ensure completion of all report forms -Completes administrative report for Nurse Executive -Reports illnesses of staff to Employee Health Nurse -Monitors attendance of designated staff -Determines appropriate critical issues and contacts the Administrator on call when needed -Provides a broad vision in the strategic development, management, and direction of staff growth and development programs for the facility. -Maintains the competency forms for all nursing staff and assists other departments as needed. -Establishes and maintaining a system of collecting and analyzing statistical data relating to staff growth and development needs and activities. -Identifies facility-wide education and training needs through analyzing data resulting from such activities as performance improvement, risk management, peer review, competency and performance appraisals, infection control, environment of care, customer satisfaction surveys. -Interprets, applies, and ensures compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, Tricare, and all other federal, state, and local regulations as they pertain to staff growth and development. -Develops, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of a facility-wide Staff Development Plan, which meets or exceeds all regulatory standards, and develops performance measurement indicators to assess its effectiveness; assists department managers in the development, implementation, and evaluation of department- specific plans. -Plans, develops implements and evaluates orientation, transfer, training, cross-training, continuing education programming, and staff growth and development activities for all employees in coordination with department managers as consistent with department managers as consistent with identified needs and the requirements for all external regulatory agencies. -Performs continuous analysis of staff growth and development performance improvement goals and objectives, re-establishing requirements which will facilitate continuous improvement in terms of outcome, effectiveness, and impact on the individual, group, facility and quality of patient care. -Coordinates the competency of the individual nursing employee as well as the department and coordinates or provides individualized training for those who have special needs. -Ensures that educational activities are designed to meet identified needs based on the type of nature of care/service provided, new technology and products, new patient populations, the facility’s policies and procedures, goals, objectives, strategic plan and priorities, and individual and/or group needs as identified through the aggregation and analysis of multiple data sources. -Ensures that all educational activities are appropriately designed in terms of purpose, objectives, content, teaching strategy, and evaluation methods. -Fosters the development of an environment that promotes excellent in education and clinical practice and interdisciplinary collaboration in staff development through the sharing of knowledge and skills from one department to others. -Ensures that any detected deficiency in meeting staff growth and development goals and is addressed with appropriate management within the time frame requested. - Coordinates the orientation of nursing school clinical at both facilities. This includes being a liaison with the school and the facility, providing orientation to the students and ensuring that agreements are in place and in compliance for each school. -Administers and oversees the UHS Behavioral Health Learning System and ensures all jobs are appropriately posted as scheduled. -Assists the Director of Nursing at each facility by attending requested special committees, and meetings. -Maintains and monitors required training database to ensure of proper notification of upcoming trainings, and notify employees and supervisors of delinquent trainings. -Notifies nursing staff and coordinates disciplinary actions when needed for delinquent required trainings. -Conducts chart audits and compiles data for each Nursing Department and prepares performance improvements reports as requested.
 
Requirements
Graduate of an approved School of Nursing; valid license with the Board of Nursing for the State of Florida; prefer three (3) years Clinical Psychiatric Nursing experience with one of those years including supervisory duties. Must have a minimum of an Associates Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
