Sr. Business Architect - UHC IS - Employer and Individual (732215)

Position Description

UnitedHealthcare is a company that's on the rise. We're expanding in multiple directions, across borders and, most of all, in the way we think. Here, innovation isn't about another gadget, it's about transforming the health care industry. Ready to make a difference? Make yourself at home with us and start doing your life's best work.(sm)

The Sr. Business Architect role is accountable for managing and communicating the architectural information supporting business/technology alignment for one or more capability domains of the UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual (UHC E&I) business segment. With a focus on proactive consultation, guidance, and partnership, an E&I business architect must understand our business strategies and initiatives and provide insights back to their business partners.

These insights include partnering with business leaders to determine the feasibility of new ideas, assessing emerging opportunities, identifying Proof of Concept opportunities (Agile), translating strategy and business needs into complete, coordinated business models, and working with OCIO and IT partners to guide the evolution of ideas into funded initiatives.

Create new insight and perspective. Our business leaders are often data rich and information poor, particularly where technology options supporting new business objectives are concerned. Business architects play an important role by bringing together information in ways that provide new insights and perspectives on operational effectiveness as well as future business opportunities; one "ah-ha" moment is worth a thousand data elements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify ways to make technology more effective for the business
  • Participate in the identification and evaluation of new business opportunities; assist in translating them into strategic initiatives as appropriate
  • Facilitate discussion with the business to collectively define the business problem and possible range of solutions
  • Clarify and illuminate strategic intent
  • Our senior leaders develop strategies, which then filter down through the organization to create aligned action
  • Given the nature of the E&I lines of business, the communication isn't always clear laterally in the organization
  • Executives typically set goals and direction but provide little guidance on specific approaches to goal attainment
  • Business architects clarify the organization's strategic intent by creating a set of strategies that provides a common framework for goal-aligned action across different organizations
  • Identify the impact of business plans on major project initiatives, business operations and solutions
  • Ensure strategic intent and impacts on supporting capabilities are mutually understood by the business and IT
  • Align business strategy and action
  • Once executives have defined a set of strategies, business architects define a set of processes, models, and metrics to help management ensure that business units across the organization are working together to attain the company's strategic vision and goals
  • The business architect translates business intent into models, guidelines, and guardrails that align independent actions across the organization toward not only achieving the same goals but also achieving common goals through a set of common approaches
  • Decomposes business strategies into the capabilities required to execute them
  • Documents resulting capability breakdown and assumptions to include analysis of people, processes and technology
  • Performs initial assessment of capability gaps and provides component definition based on gap analysis
  • Facilitates capability prioritization activities through examination of opportunity costs, benefits, duration and prerequisites
  • Presents cohesive models, capability blueprints and roadmaps to executives and stakeholders in order to secure consensus on proposed capabilities and business/technology implications
  • Clarify high-level business operations
  • Most organizations have large amounts of detailed documentation for low-level business operational views such as workflow and procedural guidelines, but most do not have an operational view appropriate for executives
  • Business architects create high-level process and organizational views that enable executives to focus their attention in the most-important areas
  • Identify critical business needs at both the macro and detail levels
  • Abstract high-level business operational approaches from detailed process and procedures
  • Document and present conceptual views depicting critical business needs and decision points
  • Identify principles to guide decision making on conceptual business / technology approaches
  • Identify synergistic opportunities and dependencies
  • As multiple organizations pursue fulfilling the enterprise's strategy, opportunities emerge for organizations to share ideas, approaches, and detailed solutions
  • Inter-organizational dependencies also materialize
  • Business architects work across organizational silos to identify opportunities for collaboration, reuse, and process integration as well as to identify and resolve dependencies and impacts
  • Translate business goals for multiple lines of business, and identify common, shared business solutions
  • Provide comprehensive analysis of business and solution dependencies, to decrease project risk and increase our ability to execute

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Business Architecture experience
  • 3+ years leading business architecture or business process improvement/optimization/reengineering efforts for a Fortune 100 National Health Insurer
  • 3+ years of experience with capability-based planning
  • 2+ years of experience modeling business processes using industry standard modeling tools and practices
  • Experience in managing relationships with senior business stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and workplace savvy
  • Proven ability to see the big picture before getting into the minor details
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • TOGAF certification of value

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience using a leading architecture planning tool, such as Alfabet, Troux or Mega
  • Six Sigma or Lean experience
