Position Description

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as subject matter expert to Human Capital Analytics Partners on analytical design/ statistical methods/machine learning approaches and suggest the best technology/tools to support the analyses
  • Provide data science thought leadership to UnitedHealth Group’s growing Human Capital Data Science team and UHG Talent Analytics Management on potential new applications of machine learning in the workforce analytics space
  • Collaborate with Talent Reporting Analysts to extract and transform the data needed to support studies to answer human capital research questions
  • Develop project outlines and design analytical approaches to answer research questions; lead the interpretation of statistical results and help draw appropriate conclusions from them
  • Collaborate with the Human Capital Analytics Partners to create presentation materials to communicate research insights
  • Provide technical guidance on the development of data architecture within UHG Human Capital to optimize efficiency and performance of data science applications
  • Build and Maintain technical expertise
  • Develop relationships with the larger machine learning community at UnitedHealth Group so as to share methods, approaches and techniques
  • Understand the internal business initiatives influencing data definitions and database architecture
  • Explore external forums to stay current on tools, techniques and applications of statistical methods. Be willing to learn and keep pace with new trends in the machine learning world
  •  Work effectively on multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, learn new topics quickly and proactively identify appropriate solutions for non-standard requests
  • Strong project management support experience and capabilities
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with others
  • Strong customer service orientation. Should be able to act as a data science subject matter expert and resource to others

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree
  • 4+ years of experience performing machine learning and statistical modeling
  • Strong analytical thinking skills, ability to make sense of results from statistical analyses and them creatively to solve business problems
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language such as R, Python and/or similar stack
  • Familiarity with common statistical packages such as Scikit Learn, R packages and/or other similar libraries
  • Demonstrate good understanding of popular supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques. These include (but are not limited to) the following: linear methods, tree based models (decision trees, random forest, etc.), SVM, dimensionality reduction algorithms (such as PCA) and clustering
  • Intermediate level of experience with relational databases and associated languages (such as SQL) and big data infrastructure (Hadoop, Spark etc)
  • 2+ years of experience working on large-scale research projects with ability to determine best statistical methodologies to use for such projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA/MS in Computer Science, Statistics or a related quantitative field
  • Experience in workforce analytics and forecasting
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, RShiny, Javascript or other similar tools/languages
  • Knowledge of basic text mining methodologies
  • Know-how of recent machine learning trends, such as deep learning
