Job Title Structural Biology Sr. Scientist, Protein Sciences

JobID 1607383

Location: San Diego, CA

Description Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development La Jolla, has an open position for a talented and creative research scientist in the Structural Biology and Protein Sciences (SBPS) Group within the Department of Oncology Medicinal Chemistry. Candidates who have demonstrated an ability to carry out innovative and high quality research to answer challenging and complex questions in structural biology are of particular interest.

The successful candidate will have significantly demonstrated expertise in exploiting protein biophysical methods to enable challenging structural biology. The candidate will work independently and as part of teams to provide biophysical insights toward ensuring that protein deliveries are fit-for-purpose (primarily X-ray crystallography, cryoEM and biochemical assay), establishing SBDD platforms and impacting projects at a strategic level. In addition to hands-on experimental work, the position requires the ability to train colleagues, ensure functionality and calibration of existing instrumentation, and lead the identification and utilization of emerging technologies to strengthen and further build on current capabilities within SBPS.

Basic Qualifications:

+ Minimum requirements for candidates are a PhD and postdoctoral experience in Biophysics, Structural Biology or a closely related field.

The ideal candidate will have a solid biophysics background and possess significant expertise in multiple of the following areas:

1) biophysical characterization (AUC, DSC, fluorescence spectroscopy, SAXS, SEC-MALS and DLS) of proteins and macromolecular complexes.

2) analysis of protein-ligand (protein:small molecule, protein:protein and protein:nucleic acid) interactions (e.g. ITC, SPR, MST) - ideally with expertise for weak affinity ligands (fragments) and covalent inhibitors.

3) ability to integrate new, impactful and cutting-edge protein biophysical methods to strengthen and further build on current capabilities within SBPS.

A working knowledge of protein characterization requirements for Cryo-EM analysis would be helpful. Familiarity with protein hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (structural dynamics) and NMR will be beneficial.

Candidates will also possess the following attributes:

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills

+ Excellent interpersonal skills which facilitate knowledge sharing and scientific discussions

+ Ability to quickly and effectively operate, communicate and influence decision making within cross-functional and multi-disciplinary drug discovery teams
