Technical Documentation Writer - Job Description


What You'll Do

The Cloud Security, User Experience group is hiring a technical writer for the Technical Documentation team. The Cloud Security group at Cisco is a fast-growing business that currently consists of two separate products--Cisco Umbrella and Cisco Cloudlock. This role will report to the Technical Documentation Manager and will be responsible for documenting the products of a geographically diverse team, delivering modern SaaS based deployment and API documentation accessible from within the product as well as via other channels (web portals such as docs.umbrella.com, Cisco repositories, etc.)

 

 

In this role you will:

  • Create, edit, and update existing written documentation, on-screen text, or online knowledge base articles.

  • Help get Cisco customers excited about new and existing features by conveying technical material in a clear, concise fashion, and keep them engaged and ready for the next release.

  • Become a subject matter expert by working with the engineers on multiple Agile development teams, and show ability to embed and become part of product teams to learn about new features in advance of release.

  • Ensuring consistency of tone and use of language, thereby becoming the voice of Cloud Security.

  • Ensure delivery of documentation in line with the public release of software in an iterative, agile-based software cycle. Deliver documentation for products in early release and iterate on the documentation through the release cycle.

  • Collect and understand a large amount of technical information from engineering teams, then translate and represent the information in a manner suitable to the target audience.

  • Clean up outdated supporting content to ensure only most relevant content is presented.

 

 


Who You'll Work With


You will collaborate and partner with the product and engineering leadership team and peers in other departments and organizations. You will interact with customer success to help resolve customer pain and with product marketing to align on terminology. You will also collaborate and engage heavily with the entire user experience team including UX research, and product design.


Who You Are


You have extensive experience writing technical documentation for highly technical enterprise software. You are just as comfortable spinning up virtual machines as you are documenting APIs. You've had experience working with teams of agile developers and product managers and love the challenge of having something new nearly every day.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Experience or training in technical writing, and/or design for usability.

  • Technical background with specific experience in computer security or enterprise software; experience in network architecture and/or complex software deployments.

  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to distill and simplify complex subjects for our busy but brilliant customers.

  • An eye for poorly written sentences, such as the one above.

  • Previous experience writing interface text for consumer or enterprise software applications.

  • Ability to work independently, communicating across multiple time zones.

  • A portfolio of your work from previous roles.
