Technician, Assay Support, Purification Process Development

The St. Louis Culture and Purification Process Development groups of Bioprocess R&D is hiring a technician position to provide laboratory in-process assay support to a diverse team of scientists and engineers focused on developing and optimizing mammalian cell culture processes for recombinant proteins and biologics for early and late phase clinical trials in support of Pfizer's Biotherapeutics portfolio. This role is to seek out directional guidance with in-line assay results and it is not a substitute for Analytical R&DD . In this role the ideal candidate will be responsible for performing critical analytical in-process studies to scientists running both the upstream and downstream processes, with the goal of developing robust, scalable, and productive process that produce therapeutic proteins with the appropriate product quality. The work could also involve working with samples from pilot scale, commercial and clinical production facilities. You may also be involved in cutting edge technology development projects that seek to discover broadly applicable methods to intensify mammalian cell culture.


+ Perform and understand operations of in-process analytical techniques such as routine HPLC assays such as protein A, reverse phase, SECHPLC, SDSPAGE, UPLC, various forms of HPLC, amino acid analysis, spectrophotometry, HCP determination by gyros and or ELISA. Also routine spectrophotometric determination of protein concentrations and an open attitude to developing other relevant analytical skills as required.

+ Additional responsibilities will include Routine maintenance on HPLC, calibrations, troubleshooting equipment, coordinating and/or performing repairs, managing laboratory consumables.

+ Maintaining various electronic databases, maintains equipment/maintenance files, performs quality audits of various analytical instruments.

+ Regularly attending meetings with scientists to analyze and communicate experimental results both orally and in writing.

+ The candidate is also expected to interact with external vendors to solve instrument issues, and internal Site Operations on any facility issues that can affect ongoing operations.

+ The ideal candidate may support scientists in routine process development and analytics understanding of mammalian and bacterial protein process development.

+ Perform all sample preparation and organization.


+ HS diploma, Associates Degree, or BS/BA in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry required

+ 1 - 2 years experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment

+ Demonstrated capability to work as a team member in a matrix development team

+ Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to interface with automated systems

+ Must be capable of generating documents utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel


+ Experience in a biological laboratory is desired

+ Understanding of mammalian and bacterial protein process development is highly desirable

+ Ability to work independently and adapt to rapidly changing priorities

+ Ability to be thorough and show great attention to detail

+ Demonstrate quality decision making and effective communication


+ Occasional overtime may be required.
