Job Description

Laurel Heights Hospital has a co-ed Acute Facility for children and adolescents, and is seeking a FT, exempt, Therapist to work with the Autism Spectrum Disorder population, ranging from ages, 6-17, in addition to having experience with varied diagnoses and psychological/emotional problems, such as: trauma, abandonment, PTSD, schizophrenia, self-injurious behaviors.  This population displays co-occurring symptoms/behaviors for ASD which includes non-verbal, serious self-injury, and total self-care. This person will also be working with challenging family situations and is capable of developing and implementing a therapeutic treatment plan in an acute setting that is in compliance with state, federal, agency and all other applicable rules and regulations.  This position will be responsible for daily group, family therapy weekly along with completion of all documentation within a 24 hour time period. In addition, to providing therapy services, case management and discharge planning experience are critical to providing comprehensive care. This individual needs to have prior experience working with different populations as well as patients who have co-occurring presentation of ASD and psychiatric diagnoses. This person will be able to work and provide supervision to direct care staff regarding, behavior plans, interventions, how to provide group therapy, and how to provide a therapeutic milieu for this challenging population.  In addition, this position is fast paced with quick turn-around for admissions and discharges; therefore, this person needs to be highly organized, capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing tasks.  EOE. 

Job Requirements

Full-time exempt Unit Therapist position (minimum 40 hours per wk.); fully licensed master’s level degree in mental health/social services/counseling field to work with females/males, age range from 6-17 who are developmentally delayed, diagnosed with ASD and experiencing significant psychiatric and behavioral symptoms. This is a challenging population, therefore; this individual must have the following requirements and/or experience:

  • Plans and administers therapeutic treatment, behavior modification, and stress management therapy to assist residents in developing/displaying appropriate behaviors
  • Changes method and degree of therapy when indicated by resident reactions/needs
  • Discusses progress toward goals with residents or families of residents such as medication regiment, family relationships, educational programs, social development, discharge plans or other behavioral problems

·        Consults with psychologist/psychiatrist or other specialists concerning treatment plans and amends plans as required.

·        Maintains regular contacts with other agencies/professionals regarding client progress in the therapeutic treatment program through phone calls, letters, and/or monthly reporting.

·        Develops and implements appropriate discharge planning with resident, family, and placing agency.

·        Develops and maintains positive relationship with external customers, families and residents and employees.

  • Ability to assess treatment goals and write goal-directed, individualized treatment plans, as well as the ability to monitor and document individual behavior patterns and modify treatment plans to meet changing treatment goals. 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the therapeutic process and commitment to help the youth achieve their treatment goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage difficult client discussions. 
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and outside agencies. 
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting. 
  • Proven track record of reliability and consistency of high performance.  Strong desire to learn and grow professionally. 
  • Exhibits an exemplary work ethic by being highly organized, detailed and thorough. 
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License in state of residency.
