Job Description

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, founded in 1986, is an 82 bed facility within the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health offers comprehensive mental health programs in Virginia. We are a Universal Health Services facility that provides psychiatrically and medically managed acute, residential treatment, and partial hospitalization for children and adolescents with significant impairments in their social and emotional development.

We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need using quality, evidence based practice treatments. We are accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is seeking a dynamic and talented Therapist 1.

The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

  • Be responsible for the delivering psychotherapy services in   individual, group and family settings to patients/residents and families to resolve emotional, behavioral, or interpersonal problems.
  • Directs and provides case management services.
  • Develops measurable goals and objectives for residents based on established program philosophy and resident needs.
  • Maintains high quality documentation of all therapy services consistent with facility policies.
  • Assesses patients’/residents’ needs regularly and assists in the updating of the Individualized Service Plan.
Job Requirements


Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor or Psychiatrist in Commonwealth of Virginia preferred. A master's degree in social work, psychology, or counseling and documentation to confirm approval for supervision by The Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Health Professionals.

  • Two or more years experience in a mental health setting working with children and/or adolescents preferred.

  • Must possess knowledge of major aspects of a residential treatment, program development, aftercare, the Joint Commission standards, State standards and regulations and related


  •  strong customer and patient focus.




Needs basic understanding of and comfort level with medical terminology, residential treatment, clinical science/pathology and psychiatric disorders.  Must know how to gather and analyze    

data.  Must be articulate, assertive, and able to communicate effectively with families, payers, therapists and physicians both verbally and in writing.  Must also demonstrate initiative, tact and

good judgment.  Must be able to acquire clear understanding of treatment priorities and ability to make sound decisions balancing resident and family needs with available resources.  Must

have basic computer skills.




Two or more years experience in a mental health setting working with children and/or adolescents is preferred.
