Job Description

Laurel Oaks Behavioral Health Center is a 118 bed Acute Psychiatric Hospital and Residential Treatment Center for children and adolescents ages four through eighteen. The 55,000 square foot facility is situated on approximately 10 acres in the southeast corner of Alabama, less than 20 miles from both Florida and Georgia. In addition to the living units, the facility houses our full service cafeteria and New Day Academy; a state-supported year-round K-12th grade school with vocational opportunities. We provide numerous recreational activities including an in-ground swimming pool, game room, playground, basketball courts, and gymnasium. The multi-disciplinary staff at Laurel Oaks collaborates to ensure that services provided are clinically and medically appropriate and highly coordinated among all treatment disciplines. Laurel Oaks specializes in the treatment of youth who have multiple challenges and special needs. All children served at Laurel Oaks have a primary psychiatric disorder but most also have co-occurring conditions such as intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and/or physical/sexual abuse victimization. Laurel Oaks Behavioral Health Center is currently seeking a Unit Director.   The U.D. will:

  • Schedule staff and oversees attendance and punctuality of staff by reviewing time sheets, assisting staff in completion of Time Off Request  forms in a timely manner to avoid payroll issues; assisting in unit coverage as staffing needs require to provide for patients’ safety and comply with budget expectations for regular and overtime hours. 
  • Attend operational meetings as scheduled by CEO and/or Director of Nursing.
  • Supervise and maintains the cleanliness of the assigned Unit.
  • Conduct unit related adherence to any and all survey/regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures timely compliance with employee performance and appraisal evaluation process.
  • Conduct/initiate investigations into patients’ complaints/grievances and ensures appropriate and comprehensive follow-up resolution in conjunction with Patient Advocate.
  • Collect Performance Improvement data monthly for assigned unit; analyzes the data and makes recommendations for improvements where needed.
  • Attend Master treatment development team meetings
  • Consistently maintains a safe environment by demonstrating/ensuring environmental safety awareness, ensuring compliance with the Search Policy and documentation of and adherence to all established Safety Program policies.  Ensures compliance and accountability to the safety procedures and policies.
  • Review staff documentation of patient rounds sheets, progress notes, point sheets, meeting forms, and shift reports to ensure accuracy and completeness of forms.  Ensures compliance and accountability in reviewing unit documents and forms.
  • Assist in management of the milieu to ensure appropriate levels of patient observation (to include line of sight), positive staff and patient interactions, performance of  unit walk-through to ensure compliance with unit schedule, and programming as evidenced by Supervision Rounds Forms. 
  • Ensure compliance and accountability of Supervision Rounds, adherence to unit schedules, positive patient and staff interactions, appropriate staff observation of patients, and overall management of the unit milieu.
  • Demonstrate and ensures effective and positive communication skills with other departments to promote the provision of quality patient care across the continuum.
  • Conduct interviews, recommends hires/terminations, and coordinates corrective action processes.
  • Work with unit personnel to embrace staff retention.
  • Ensure staffing is appropriate to provide for patients safety and comply with budget expectations for regular and overtime hours.
  • Responsible for management of any emergency use of overtime wages by Mental Health Technicians and Leads.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field strongly preferred

 

Three (3) years supervisory experience required

 

Minimum of 5 years experience in the mental health field, preferable with children, adolescents and families.
