Role Summary

The Associate Scientist position in the Early Bioprocess Development group within the Vaccines Research and Development organization supports the development of cell culture and bacterial fermentation processes for vaccine antigen production. With the guidance of senior researchers, the incumbent will develop and optimize upstream production processes using high-throughput culturing technologies such as shaking platforms and automated small scale disposable reactor systems (such as automated microbioreactors, ambr), or at larger scale in bench-top stirred-tank reactors. The chosen candidate would also be accountable for carrying out various assays to assess the performance of experimental cultures. Lastly, the incumbent will serve as the primary high-throughput systems user, responsible for systems maintenance, organization of materials and stocking of consumables, in addition to operating the system to carry out experiments. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior scientist to work at the cutting edge of upstream high throughput process development and take on a role with significant responsibility.

Role Responsibilities

+ Perform cell culture/fermentation development experiments using shaken culturing devices (tubes and plates), automated small scale systems (ambr 15 or 250) or bench-top reactor systems to optimize and enhance protein production using mammalian and bacterial expression platforms

+ Serve as department primary ambr systems super-user, developing methods and use practices, writing procedures, providing technical support, scheduling maintenance and purchasing consumables

+ Assemble process aids (e.g., bottles with tubing accessories) and make solutions, buffers and growth medium in support of fermentation and cell culture experiments

+ Maintain detailed records, including the capture of experimental data and discoveries in electronic laboratory notebooks, and keep management informed as to progress or issues

+ Collaborate with colleagues within Vaccine Research and Development organization including Bioprocess Purification, Analytical, and Formulation Development groups

+ Plan and prioritize fermentation and cell culture related activities

+ Satisfactorily complete all training in compliance with departmental requirements and follow appropriate safety practices in the workplace. Where applicable, perform job responsibilities in compliance with GLP and all other regulatory agency requirements

+ B.S. degree in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Micobiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or related discipline with minimum 1 year post-bacclaurette experience. M.S. with no industrial experience will be considered only with significant academic laboratory, co-op or internship experience.

+ Hands-on experience with microbial or mammalian cell culture is required. Skills must be transferrable to small-scale process development.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

+ Must have excellent time management and organizational skills, and the ability react decisively to equipment related issues.

+ Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software is required.

+ Experience in programming and/or automation of liquid handlers is desired.
