Optum Advisory Services is seeking a senior consulting leader to grow its consulting business in the payer and provider markets. This position is responsible for the identification and sale of large scale consulting opportunities and development and sale of consulting solutions in the multiple areas of payer and provider consulting including Operations, Health Management, Systems Integration, Analytics, and Financial & Risk Management.


This role requires executive level relationships and a proven track record of sales and business development performance in healthcare consulting. Primary responsibilities will include developing new clients and sale of client engagements with payers, providers, hospitals, health systems, etc., with focus on internal consulting for UnitedHealth Group business segments.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Sales / Growth Leadership (50 - 75% Time Allocation):
    • Define and own the business development strategy and plan for a targeted business; own and manage sales account, client relationships, leads, pursuits, proposals, and financials
    • Proven sales acumen, with ability to sell large Consulting / services engagements
    • Work closely with Consulting’s functional practice leaders to drive new business and help achieve each practice’s financial goals
    • Gather information, analyze, and develop strategies concerning dynamics that may affect the Consulting business relationship with targeted clients, such as changes in client ownership or new affiliations; current market share and targets of opportunities for new growth; clients' changing requirements; competitor strengths and weaknesses; and communicate these strategies as a part of Optum activities with the client
    • Identify and deliver opportunities for sales and business development collaboration with other Optum business segments and front office sales members
    • Adept at understanding complex concepts and situations presented by the business environment; can quickly assess complex problems and select the appropriate solution
    • Demonstrate expert knowledge of services and products sold in their market; ability to clearly explain the difference between products; ability to architect the correct solution for the customer situation
    • Develop new Consulting services opportunities that enhance the ongoing strategic business relationship between Optum and Healthcare Payer market clients
    • Build internal networks and consensus to shape decisions of upper management. Builds and maintain positive, constructive working relationships with senior levels in the company as well as internal and external clients, vendors, brokers, consultants and regulators outside the organization.
    • Balance the big-picture concerns with day-to-day activities; link business operation and business plans to that of broader organization. Identifies critical high-payoff strategies. Solid understanding of the company and department’s mission, strategy, strengths and weaknesses
    • Utilize strong business mindset: thoroughly understands the financial drivers and levers of the Healthcare Payer business
  • Client Engagement Delivery (25 - 50% Time Allocation):
    • Perform as an Engagement Manager driving the vision and planning for large and medium scale projects/programs
    • Perform a billable role to clients in oversight and hands-on execution of large scale projects/programs; large scale programs are defined as high cost, high complexity and/or high risk
    • Serve in an advisory role to clients on business strategy, operational effectiveness and healthcare best practices
    • Ensure that quality assurance methods are implemented within the program
    • Perform as the liaison between the client and delivery team for any escalation issues, ensuring project is delivered on-time and within budget
    • Participate in senior level program funding and prioritization decision processes
    • Provide strategic input to the development of program roadmap and timelines 
    • Create a team oriented work climate that enables professional development and encourages creative solutions and strategies
    • Manage program financials and mitigate program risks
    • Provide status updates and review of programs to senior leadership
    • Provide coaching and mentoring of project team with the goal of developing and retaining talent within the organization
