Optum has recently transitioned the organization to have a much stronger product and service mindset in terms of how we develop our offerings and sell in the marketplace.   As part of this transition Optum is creating a corporate product function to accelerate our cross - functional portfolio development and innovation.  The VP of Optum Product for Payer assists in defining the Product Strategy for the Payer market, helps inform and influence the overall product portfolio, and provides input to the product development process ensuring future developments meet the needs of the payer market with an emphasis on creating and coordinating cross Optum solutions for the payer space.  This is a new role at Optum focused on creating a world class product organization.  This position will play a critical role in Optum’s development.  This position will closely coordinate with the product groups in each business unit (OptumRx, Optum Insight, Optum Health) as well as with marketing, finance and sales.  The VP of Product (Payer) has a deep understanding of the business strategy and translates market trends and customer needs into a comprehensive Payer - focused Product Strategy that ensures that business growth and revenue goals are achieved.


The role is responsible for strategic Product Management activities that relate to the Payer market.  This includes working closely with Product leaders to develop a strategic vision for the product portfolio and product solutions for the payer market.  The role reports to the SVP of Product Strategy for Optum.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Play a significant role ensuring that the portfolio of solutions meets or exceeds revenue and market share goals
  • Synthesizes competitive analysis and market assessments to inform the product strategy for Payer, and establish go - to - market strategies that capitalize on market trends, customer needs and competitive positioning
  • Understands the competitive landscape - competitor strategies, positioning, strengths and weaknesses
  • Establishes a Strategic Roadmap for the portfolio, including New Product concepts, and extensions of existing solutions
  • Helps identify target customers and champions Market Intimacy to uncover market needs
  • Understands and documents macro / micro market trends and competitive threats to drive cross - Optum product strategy
  • Constantly collects and analyzes performance data (e.g., market, financial, and operational) in order to identify new opportunities for the business
  • Engages key clients for strategic discussions on market trend impact, current issues, and new product concepts
  • Cross Optum product value proposition development enabling end - to - end solutions for the payer market
  • Coordination of Optum Innovation activities, including cross enterprise coordination (including technology and UHG) and working with the businesses to identify new areas of innovation
  • Support Sales for Key Client activities
