Description

Cox Communications is searching for a Video Systems Engineer III who will focus on providing design and support activities for future and deployed digital video technologies in accordance with FCC regulations, industry-standards, and Cox business needs. 

What technologies will this role use?  MPEG, Broadcast and Narrowcast video distribution systems, CCAP, and IPTV systems supporting Cox digital video service offerings.

What else will this role entail?
• participating in design activities for current and future state of Cox video infrastructure
• developing test-plans, configuring lab environments, and conducting equipment test and evaluations. All design and test activities require appropriate documentation.
• conducting research related to video technologies along with internal and external partners, including other technology teams and vendors.
• developing tools and processes to assist with platform updates and modifications to achieve Cox Engineering design standards with minimal downstream impacts.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Tasks:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the quality philosophy and values of COX Communications by maintaining established policies and procedures, organizational objectives, continuous quality improvement and quality assessment.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues and track them to resolution in both IP and RF networks.
    Design, evaluate, implement, and support audio and video collection, processing, and distribution systems.
  • Make recommendations for the introduction of enhancements to new and existing technologies and products in the Cox video product portfolio. Key technologies include MPEG-2, H.264, and HEVC compression, multi-bitrate encoding, multiplexing, transcoding, packaging, statistical multiplexing, switched digital video (SDV) and their associated management systems in various implementations.
  • Develop specifications, written requirements, RFP documents and designs for video products or projects. Review vendor responses and recommend solutions. Assist in planning, testing, and implementation across a broad range of projects. Provide timely feedback on product or project designs and plans developed by others.
  • Perform evaluation of equipment as needed for various projects. Design, build and oversee the use of lab suites for testing. Make formal recommendations for system implementations and/or enhancements based on analysis and evaluations.
  • Ensure lab systems are maintained at the peak performance levels and ensure that all technical aspects of the systems’ design are met. Perform daily, weekly and monthly checks and maintenance to ensure systems continue to run in a peak condition.
  • Installs, wires and configures new equipment in complex networked systems and validates proper operation.
  • Maintain documentation and perform other administrative duties. Assist in the analysis of systems and operations; document procedures and operating methods; define system requirements; and analyze documentation files and reports.
  • Assist in troubleshooting system issues, and act as field support representative on all escalated system outages.
    Provide written updates to management on status and post mortem report upon resolution of issues. 
  • Travel 10-20%



Qualifications

Minimum:

  • 5+ years of experience required in related field (i.e. Engineering.)  3+ years of experience required if candidate possesses a related advanced degree (MS/MBA or above)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary. Proficient knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc).
  • Technical Support role experience strongly desired, Problem solving & troubleshooting skills essential. A strong candidate will possess the ability to gather relevant information systematically; consider a broad range of factors; seek input from others; identify root/probable causes and implement corrective action in a timely manner.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated understanding of MPEG structure required, integrated Digital Video Application experience.
  • Strong networking, Linux and VM skills.  
  • Computer networking and routing skills.
  • Understanding of Analog (RF) and Digital signals, desirable.
  • Three or more years of experience with Cisco or Arris digital cable platforms preferred. Previous cable operator, HFC, RF and network experiences required. Knowledge of ICOMS billing system a plus.
