The VP of National Broker Sales will effectively manage the National Broker Sales Channel to achieve the goals and strategic direction that translate into profitable lines of Medicare business for the corporation while fostering and influencing key relationships.


A majority of this travel will cover the central and eastern time zones.  Candidates residing in those locations will be ideal for this role due to the travel expectation for this position.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work to identify and prioritize opportunities to grow membership with in National Key Accounts
  • Forecast membership targets and goals
  • Anticipate and adjust for problems and/or roadblocks
  • Accurately scope out the time and resources needed to accomplish sales targets/goals for the Broker Sales Channel
  • Work closely with local markets to achieve assigned monthly, quarterly and annual sales and growth goals
  • Establish tactical and operational goals that facilitate the company’s strategy implementation for the Broker Sales Channel
  • Work cooperatively across all Sales Channels to ensure the achievement of the organizational overall goals with a concentration on the Broker Sales Channel overall goal
  • Develop and enhance sales force capabilities by providing oversight to all field sales activities as they relate to the training and development of Brokers
  •  Model disciplined leadership skills and executive behavior
  • Develop an organization structure, operational standards, and policies and procedures to achieve/exceed business goal.
  • Recruit and hire qualified staff and provide for their training and development
  • Set performance expectations and goals, evaluate performance results, provide feedback to managers and administers appropriate rewards. Foster a cohesive and supportive team environment
  •  Assign priorities and make high-level decisions that are consistent with the company’s mission and strategic goals
  • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of staff and use their strengths to accomplish tasks as a team
  • Facilitate cooperative behavior across the Broker Sale Channel, with Regional Vice President, Sales Director, and local Agent Managers
  • Create an environment of personal and team accountability through standards for field and staff development
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare and Retirement industry and competitors
  • Understand the history and general trends in the industry and their implications for the future
  • Stay informed of and anticipate the actions of competitors and strategic partners
  • Maintains working knowledge of Medicare regulations, the managed care industry, the competitive environment, pertinent legislation, etc.
  • Ability to lead strategic planning for multiple markets and Sales Directors
  • Critical thinking, planning, and organization.
  • Ability to develop analytics to support strategies and plan
  • Technology skills
  • Strong communication skills written and verbal – negotiation and influence skills to develop and maintain relationships in a matrix environment
  • Ability to represent the organization – public speaking and broad understanding of the UHG organization
  • Proven track record of execution
  •  Able to quickly respond to market conditions
  • Ethics and experience in a structured/regulated sales organization
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment – versatile and flexible

Required  Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Health and Life Insurance license must be obtained and maintained as required by state law
  • 7+ years sales / business development experience in a direct to consumer / retail environment with demonstrated ability to consistently achieve assigned sales / growth targets
  • 7+ years’ experience managing individual sales representatives responsible for selling a portfolio of products via a needs / solutions based sales approach, including cross sell, up sell, product migrations
  • Experience in managing sales management staff
  • Managing and influencing Key account relationships
  • Ability to travel 75% of the time across assigned market(s)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in / Knowledge of the insurance industry, preferably Medicare and Final Expense
  • Experience in and / or managing sales agents, leads, marketing resources, etc.  across multiple channels
  • Knowledge of CMS regulations and standards
