Position Description

Accessibility Director will be responsible for ensuring online programs, services and activities conform to the designated requirements, which provide for equal access to online content and programs, regardless of user ability.  Director will be responsible for the establishment, delivery and ongoing oversight of content accessibility for the UHC Digital program. Director will establish standards and provide support for meeting digital accessibility requirements. Director will play an active role internally and externally to ensure UnitedHealthcare is a leader in the Accessibility world.  This role will also support the Business Strategy, Priorities and Product leadership in the ongoing strategy for UHC Digital.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for adherence to company digital accessibility processes and policies
  • Design, create, and deliver on a structure required to ensure success for internal teams and ultimately a positive experience for the members
  • Overseeing teams (Subject Matter Experts, Faculty/Staff representatives, Compliance, Legal, Consultants, etc.)  to create, communicate, maintain, and implement digital accessibility-related policies
  • Partner with key internal stakeholders developing, communicating and maintaining company-level processes related to digital accessibility, including plans for new and existing online content, training and procurement standards
  • Partner with Web Services and other stakeholders, establishing and overseeing enterprise-wide systems for digital accessibility training, support, quality control and monitoring
  • Creating and managing an enterprise-wide change management / communication plan related to the digital accessibility initiative, including communicating progress, status and requirements and creating reports and presentations for varying audiences as needed.
  • Managing the company's relationship with digital accessibility auditor(s) and vendor(s)
  • Managing third-party software audits and overseeing execution of corrective actions
  • Collaborating with Web Services and Information Technology on development of a central resource for sharing information on the digital accessibility initiative
  • Collaborating with internal team members and Subject Matter Experts to create required digital accessibility documentation, reporting and deliverables
  • Assisting in identification and procurement of digital accessibility systems and tools for company use
  • Facilitating resolution of any concerns/complaints related to accessibility of the programs, services and activities
  • Contribute to thought leadership internally and externally
  • Manage key tracks of work (including other individuals) in accordance with established budget, work plans and quality standards
  • Partner with Digital Delivery teams on the creation of requirements and user stories
  • Participate in Agile Scrum process to ensure business vision is being accurately implemented and meet market expectations. Ensure digital solutions are delivered on time and on budget, including identifying and resolving risks and issues. Subscribe to Optum Product Methodology and business processes, providing input to further advance the discipline and evangelize across the team
  • Champion Accessibility across the organization to educate the importance and have it become part of our DNA
Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years experience in digital operations, web development, project management, business analysis or similar management role
  • 4+ years leading accessibility at a Fortune 500
  • A full understanding of Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines and specifications
  • Must be fluent in WCAG 2.0 guidelines, know WAI-ARIA, UAAG, and ATAG specifications
  • Experience improving and remediating accessibility using web-based technology including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience leading accessibility evaluations and usability testing for accessibility
  • Ability to develop tools/resources to help provide implementation directions and requirements for UX Design and Front End Development teams
  • Experience with assistive technologies and accessibility-related software including JAWS®, NVDA, VoiceOver, Window-Eyes, ZoomText, MAGic®, Dragon® NaturallySpeaking or other speech recognition software
  • 5+ years working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative development environment with experience in large, complex software or web applications
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively both with diverse teams and independently
  • Be an expert in conducting comprehensive accessibility testing with assistance against the WCAG 2.0 (AA) Success Criteria and the updated Section 508 federal requirements using the following methodologies: visual analysis; screen reader reviews; color sampling; keyboard only; gesture only; and code reviews
  • Experience working within constraints of user-centered design principles and tools
  • Experience with Agile development practices
  • Knowledge regarding how to format PDFs to be accessible
  • Strong project management, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Commitment to accessible online design and knowledge of disability regulations, including but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504), and the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0)
  • Bachelors or advanced degree from an accredited college or university. (Information Technology, Human Computer Interaction or a related field preferred, but not required.)
  • Demonstrated project management skills: must be able to build consensus and enthusiasm among stakeholders at all levels, and provide clear documentation of progress and deliverables
  • Strong business analysis, digital industry understanding, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • A self - starter with an entrepreneurial spirit with vision and leadership to help facilitate change within a company and the industry
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Healthcare industry experience
  • Accessibility leader with W3C
  • Experience delivering Web experiences that meet user needs based on usability research, UX design and information architecture principles, and product management methodologies
  • Experience working collaboratively at all levels and across business lines using influencing skills
  • Experience in other interactive and digital industries such as retail and financial services
  • Experience working effectively in matrixed, highly collaborative, team oriented environments
