Position Summary:

Fairmount Behavioral Health is looking for a weekday, evening shift Charge Nurse. The Charge Nurse supervises the delivery of nursing care provided by professional and support nursing staff on a designated unit.  Care is provided in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Fairmount Behavioral Health System and the ANA Standards of Practice for Psychiatric Mental Health Care.  The Charge Nurse prescribes, coordinates, and delegates care utilizing the nursing process which is integrated into the multidisciplinary treatment team plan of care.  The Charge Nurse is accountable for nursing care activities on a shift basis and is responsible for promoting and enhancing professional nursing practice on the unit. The Charge Nurse position at Fairmount Behavioral Health System is a entry level leadership position as it serves as the direct unit supervisor. The Charge Nurse reports directly to the designated Nurse Manager.

This position has no scheduled weekend shifts other than a weekend rotation once or twice a year!

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description.  The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position.  Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including children, adolescents, and adults.


Graduate of an accredited nursing program.  BSN preferred.


Two (2) year prior psychiatric nursing experience preferred, prior experience working with specific patient population. 


Licensure and registration by the Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners as a registered nurse.


Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, behavior and crisis management, and CPR training.


Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior.  Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and other hazardous waste.  General hospital environment.


Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients.  Push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping.  Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.
